Essure Tubal Sterilization
Essure is a hormone-free method of permanent birth control.  For women who are no longer considering having a child this is an alternative form of non-reversible contraception.  This procedure can be done in the office or outpatient setting and involves no surgical scars or hospitalization.  Instead, it is done by inserting a small lighted camera into the uterus (through the vagina) and inserting two micro-coils into the fallopian tubes.  These coils cause blockage of the tubes leading to permanent contraception.  This procedure has many advantages.  It requires no incisions or scars, it can be performed with minimal anesthesia, it is 99.8% effective, recovery is quick and it has minimal side effects. To have this procedure done you must be in the early part of the menstrual cycle and you must use a back up method of contraception until the micro coils complete the blockage, which takes approximately 3 months.  This procedure has many advantages over the traditional laparoscopic tubal ligation which requires general anesthesia and entry into the abdominal / pelvic cavity.  It may also be a more effective method of permanent birth control.

Before having this procedure, your provider will discuss your medical history, your obstetric history, do a physical exam and image your uterus with an ultrasound to ensure that you are a candidate for this procedure.
